The study compares several outcomes as proxies for ease of intubation including time to complete intubation, number of attempts needed, minimum peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) during intubation, and number of episodes of SpO2 falling below 90% before intubation is completed. The patient population is consenting adult patients with BMI ≥40, who are already scheduled for general anesthesia. Intubations will be performed by attending anesthesiologists or anesthesiology residents. Obesity is a known risk factor for difficult intubation due to anatomical changes caused by increased soft tissue around the face and neck. Obese patients' blood oxygen level can rapidly fall during intubation because these patients often have reduced functional residual capacity, and the acuity of any complications may also be increased because these patients also often have additional comorbidities.",[34,40],{"label":35,"type":36,"description":37,"interventionNames":38},"GlideScope Arm","ACTIVE_COMPARATOR","Intubation with GlideScope",[39],"Device: Intubation with GlideScope",{"label":41,"type":42,"description":43,"interventionNames":44},"Airway Scope Arm","EXPERIMENTAL","Intubation with Airway Scope",[45],"Device: Intubation with Airway Scope",[47,51],{"type":48,"name":37,"description":49,"armGroupLabels":50,"otherNames":23},"DEVICE","Intubation performed by anesthesiologist using the GlideScope video laryngoscope device",[35],{"type":48,"name":43,"description":52,"armGroupLabels":53,"otherNames":23},"Intubation performed by anesthesiologist using the Airway Scope video laryngoscope device",[41],[55],{"name":56,"role":57,"phone":58,"phoneExt":23,"email":59},"Yuta Kashiwagi, MD","CONTACT","505-272-2610","YKashiwagi@salud.unm.edu",[61],{"facility":62,"status":23,"city":63,"state":64,"zip":65,"country":66,"countryCode":67,"cosmosGeoPoint":68,"geoPoint":73,"contacts":74},"University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center","Albuquerque","New Mexico","87131","United States","US",{"type":69,"coordinates":70},"Point",[71,72],-106.65114,35.08449,{"lat":72,"lon":71},[75],{"name":56,"role":57,"phone":58,"phoneExt":23,"email":59},{"type":77,"investigatorFullName":78,"investigatorTitle":79,"investigatorAffiliation":5,"oldNameTitle":23,"oldOrganization":23},"PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR","Yuta Kashiwagi","Assistant Professor","100627817",false,"NCT07453563","Airway Scope vs GlideScope for Intubation in Obese Patients","Comparison of GlideScope and Airway Scope for Intubating Morbidly Obese Patients: A Randomized Controlled Study","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Adult (age ≥18 years)\n* Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥40\n* Scheduled for surgery with general anesthesia\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Pregnancy\n* Congenital facial or airway anomalies\n* History of major neck surgery or tracheostomy\n* History of any lung diseases\u002Fconditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, lung resection, or lung cancer\n* History of cardiac failure or myocardial infarction\n* Prisoners","ALL","18 Years",{"count":89,"type":90},70,"ESTIMATED","INTERVENTIONAL",[93],"NA","This study compares the time required to complete intubation in obese patients (Body Mass Index 40 or greater) when using either the GlideScope or Airway Scope video laryngoscope device to help place the endotracheal tube.",[96],"Intratracheal Inbubation","NOT_YET_RECRUITING","2026-04-28",{"date":100,"type":101},"2026-05-05","ACTUAL",{"date":103,"type":90},"2026-06",{"date":105,"type":90},"2027-03",{"name":5,"class":6},1]
